There’s a moment in my latest novel, The Percentages Men, when one of the bad guys asks: ”Who the fuck gets a poem written about them? Heroes, that’s who. Good guys.”
Well, I’ve had a poem written about me. A number of years ago, some of the people I worked with clubbed together and commissioned the Scottish poet, Andrew Philip, not only to compose a poem in my honour, but also to recite the poem at the party I had thrown to celebrate my retiral.
The poem is called A Generous Light. It has been framed and hangs in my study, so that I see it every day and am reminded of the wonderful gift and the beautiful words. I hope you can read those words in the photo above.
When I received the poem, I was probably a tad tongue-tied. I was in early recovery from a stroke. I was also very drunk. Not a recommended combination, my friends. But writing the novel has reminded me of the occasion. So I’m taking the opportunity now to give my belated, but heartfelt, thanks to the lovely folk who commissioned it.
I hope my “colours spark across the narrow sky in ever rising waves”. I hope I’m still one of the good guys.
